In the few weeks since their launch, millions of lists have been created and maintained by self-selected "curators" as a way to sort, rank, label, and describe Twitter accounts. The cumulative effect of this collective action has been the emergence of a simple and authoritative measure of influence - the higher the number of lists to which you are added, the more significant your social network standing.
You can see how many lists you're on by checking the sidebar of your Twitter account. Clicking on the link will take you to the lists. Keep in mind, that like Google Sidewiki and other social media sites that rely on user-generated content, you may not like a list you're on. Consequently, you may remove yourself from a list simply by blocking the creator of the list.
Since it's easy for anyone to add and publish lists, if you have an idea for one, just click "New list" in the sidebar of your Twitter account and you're on your way. To add people to your list use the "Lists" drop drown on their profile page. I've included the video, above, for further explanation.
If you're looking for a list to follow or some ideas to create your own, I've created two lists, one based on my Advisor Twitter Index Canada called the Canadian Advisor Twitter List and the other, a list of Financial Services Marketing Meetup Speakers. Pat Allen of Advisor Tweets has published the US Advisor Twitter List, and if you'd like there are more uses for lists, and even a website for Twitter lists.
